Ferdinand Bauer Ferdinand Bauer () is generally recognised as the finest late 18th / early 19th century botanical artist.

He was appointed Natural History Draughtsman, on the recommendation of Sir Joseph Banks, to Captain Mathew Flinder’s circumnavigation of Australia in HMS Investigator (). As an obsessive perfectionist, he engraved his own plates from his own.

Fourth Book in the Art of Nature Series about a man whose only legacy is his art work. Ferdinand Bauer became a traveling painter, recording the plant life of Greece and Asia Minor. Inat the age of forty one, he became a painter for the natural history expedition aboard the Investigator, which was mapping the coast of Australia/5(3).

Forgotten artist Ferdinand Bauer has been called "the Leonardo of natural history". Not only was he a brilliant illustrator of Australian wildlife but he could distinguish shades of green as a. David’s new book, Painting by Numbers: the life and art of Ferdinand Bauer is the first of its kind and not just because it features never-before-published works. Painting by Numbers is enriched by the State Library of New South Wales’ DX Lab, a data visualisation project that began two years ago, and has since revolutionised the way the library is able to bring information to life.

The site was developed in conjunction with the upcoming book Painting by Numbers: The Life and Art of Ferdinand Bauer by botanist David Mabberley, Author: Allison Meier. Renowned illustrator Ferdinand Bauer was captivated by Australia’s exotic flora and fauna when he arrived in with Matthew Flinders.

Born Franz Bauer on 14 March in Feldsberg in Lower Austria (now Valtice in the Czech Republic). His father was the Court Painter and died when his three children were infants. He was the older brother (by two years) of the much-travelled and renowned Ferdinand Bauer who was also a botanical artist.

I Ferdinand Bauer book was not without some hesitation that I agreed to write a review of this book. For years, David and I had worked – admittedly with a different focus – on the Bauer brothers, partly in parallel (Mabberley ; Lack), partly in collaboration (Lack with Mabberley ), and recently I summarized my research in a monograph covering the lives and works of all three brothers, i.e Author: H.

Walter Lack. Ten more of Ferdinand's plates were published in the atlas to Flinders' A Voyage to Terra Australis (London, ).

Greatly disappointed at the commercial failure of his Illustrationes, Ferdinand Bauer returned to Austria intaking much natural history material with him. He died at Hietzing, Vienna, on 17 March   Ferdinand Bauer Franz Bauer was definitely overshadowed by his rather more famous younger brother who travelled extensively with botanists and explorers to map and record: the natural flora and fauna of Greece with Dr John Sibthorp, the professor of botany at Oxford University.

They travelled to Athens, Crete, the Aegean islands, Delphi, Rhodes. Ferdinand Christian Baur, (born JSchmiden, near Stuttgart, Württemberg [Germany]—died December 2,Tübingen), German theologian and scholar who initiated the Protestant Tübingen school of biblical criticism and who has been called the father of modern studies in church history.
